A few incidents are enough to prove that there is life in the forest. Such an incident has now taken place in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra. In a small sanctuary where there has been no trace of tigers for decades, a tiger has formed its new den. This three-year-old tiger started its journey from the Tipeshwar sanctuary in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. It covered a distance of 450 km, crossed Adilabad in Telangana and Nanded and Ahmedpur areas of Maharashtra. Finally, it settled in the Yedshi Ramling Ghat Wildlife Sanctuary in Dharashiv district. Experts confirmed that this is the tiger by comparing old photos taken in Tipeshwar and images recorded in camera traps in Yedshi. Forest department officials said that this tiger reached here in December last year.
The name ‘Ramling’
The local forest officials named the tiger ‘Ramling’ after the famous Shiva temple nearby. The Yedshi sanctuary is spread over an area of just 22.50 sq km. Although it is small for a tiger’s habitat, officials say that Ramling often ventures towards nearby areas like Barshi, Bhum and Tuljapur. The sanctuary is home to an abundance of game animals like wild boar and sambar deer. Therefore, Ramling is living comfortably here. Range Forest Officer Amol Munde clarified that there has been no attack on humans so far. The authorities have launched a major operation to shift the tiger to the Sahyadri Tiger Reserve. A special team worked for 75 days from January to April this year. Drones were also used. However, Ramling has been seen very rarely. Officials say that the tiger has shown extraordinary skill in hiding itself. This is the fourth tiger to enter the Marathwada region since 1971. Experts believe that the fact that a tiger has settled here after decades is proof that the forests in the area are healthy.
Challenges faced
Electric fences set up by farmers to protect crops and human movement are some of the challenges facing the Ramling. Officials said that special teams have been formed to monitor its movements. Maintaining a balance between the tiger and humans without any conflicts has now become a big test. After a long journey of 450 kilometers, the Ramling has chosen a new home in the forests of Yedshi. The fact that a tiger has settled here after decades is a sign of the revival of the forest. For this tiger to live safely and comfortably here, human care is also needed. This success story will be meaningful only if the three continue to coexist – forest, tiger, and man.
