New Delhi. Pictures of many rare animals including the Pallas Cat have surfaced for the first time in Arunachal Pradesh . These pictures were found during wildlife survey. Let us tell you that the Pallas Cat whose picture has surfaced is found at an altitude of 5000 meters above sea level.

Five wild cats seen above 4200 meters

In a wildlife survey conducted in Arunachal, five different wild cats were captured on camera at altitudes above 4200 metres. These include snow leopard, common leopard, clouded leopard, leopard cat and marbled cat.

Features of the Pallas cat

The Pallas cat is different from other cats by its physical appearance. It is small and solitary, with dense brown fur and round ears. The Pallas cat is mainly found in countries like Mongolia, China , Russia, Kazakhstan and Iran and lives in cold desert areas up to 5000 meters altitude.

The largest survey ever

Between July and September 2024, WWF-India installed 136 camera traps at 83 locations across 2000 square kilometres in West Kameng and Tawang districts. It is believed to be India’s most comprehensive wildlife monitoring exercise.

broke altitude records

The survey recorded the highest altitude records ever for several species.

  • Common Leopard – 4,600 metres
  • Clouded Leopard – 4,650 metres
  • Marble Cat – 4,326 metres
  • Himalayan Wood Owl – 4,194 metres
  • Grey-headed flying squirrel – 4,506 metres

All these altitude records are recorded for the first time in India and may even exceed the global limit.

Snow leopard and common leopard together

The camera traps recorded snow leopards and common leopards scent-marking in the same location. This provided new information that these two big cats may share the same alpine habitat.

Shepherd community also came on camera

The survey also revealed photographs of the Brokpa pastoralist community and their livestock. This reflects the age-old grazing traditions that have made the co-existence of humans and wildlife possible in these high-altitude rangelands .
