Krishna River: Krishna and Godavari are in flood... but the ponds are not flooded

Hyderabad: Despite the high flow in the Godavari and Krishna rivers, hopes are dashed with stagnant ponds. Thousands of TMCs of water are already flowing from the Krishna and Godavari rivers. On the other hand, the ponds in the basin are not flowing as expected due to the rising water level of the Krishna-Godavari rivers. As the rains continue to fall across Telangana, there is despair among the farmers. Electricity consumption is increasing due to cultivation on boreholes. Groundwater is running low.

The average amount of water in the ponds across Telangana is not even full.

Mahabubabad, Kamareddy, Vikarabad, Nalgonda, Rajannasiricilla, Hyderabad, Warangal, Medak, Medchal Malkajgari, Hanumakonda, Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Suryapet, Nirmal, Mulugu, Jangaon, Sangareddy, Jagtial, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mancherial, Peddapalli districts have not received more than ten percent new water in their tanks due to deficient rainfall today . No new water is added in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Kumurambheem districts.15 percent of the rainfall recorded New water has not reached the tanks.

Even though Godavari is flowing from Bhadradri Kothagudam and Khammam districts, the expected water has not reached the tanks and ponds locally. An average of 17 percent of the 44,000 tanks across Telangana are not even filled with water. Even though the cultivation season is passing, the lack of water in tanks and ponds has made cultivation of crops doubtful.

Crops that should be cultivated in lakhs of acres have not been grown in even hundreds of acres. Tanks in many villages in the Godavari Krishna basin have dried up without water. SSR. Even though water is not coming from Kaleshwaram projects, water can be stored in the Devadula project with the water flowing from below them.

Farmers are demanding that if the incomplete works of the third phase of the Devadula project are completed, 38 TMC of water should be stored and diverted to the tanks. For the last eight years, water has been transferred from the Tapasupalli reservoir on the outskirts of Ainapur through canals and pipelines and filled into the tanks, which has led to an increase in the groundwater level in Cheryala subdivision. Water springs have emerged in dry agricultural wells. This year, the Godavari was lifted for only two days last week. After that, it was stopped. Farmers are waiting for irrigation water to fill the Tapasupalli reservoir with Godavari water.

This has increased the need to fill the Tapasupalli reservoir with Godavari water and transfer it to the tanks. For the last eight years, Godavari water has been lifted through pipelines at Eturanagaram to the Tapanupalli reservoir and from there to the tanks. In the past, more than 50 tanks were filled in Cheryala, Kondapaka, Komuravelli, Dhulammitta, Maddur, and Bachannapet mandals of Jangaon district. This is not the case today. Due to the lack of rain and the delay in the transfer of Godavari water, the tanks have filled up.

They are appearing like water holes. Due to this, the cultivation condition of 50 thousand acres of ayacut has become miserable. There are also problems with drinking water. There is water in Laknavaram within 12 feet. The water level in Ramappa, Ganapasamudram, Bayyaram Peddacheruvu, Pakalasarassu, and Mylaram reservoir is low. There is no trace of water in Kamareddy and Nizamabad districts.

21 TMC of water in SSRCC

With only 21 TMC of water in the SRCC, the situation in northern Telangana is such that the Nizamsagar reservoir can fully irrigate the ayacut only when there is a flood from the upper reaches. Recently, water was released for the drinking needs of the people of Nizamabad city and Bodhan town, and the reserves have decreased. The small amount of water in the reservoir has been provided to the 1.15 lakh acres of ayacut through 149 distributors up to the Alisagar lift irrigation scheme, and farmers are cultivating other crops along with paddy.

The full water level of Nizamsagar is 1405 feet, of which it has a storage capacity of 17.802 TMC. Currently, only 4.703 TMC is stored at a height of 1391 feet. From June 18 to 25, 0.75 TMC of water was released from the reservoir for drinking water for the people of Nizamabad and Bodhan towns, and 0.72 TMC for cooking during the monsoon season.

Currently, the authorities are releasing 1200 cusecs of water for the second time for crop cultivation on a weekly basis. If there is no rain upstream, there is a possibility of releasing only two more tranches of water from Nizamsagar to the ayacut. This is causing concern to the farmers. They are waiting for the arrival of the rain. Although there is an opportunity with the Kaleshwaram lift irrigation scheme to transfer water from Kondapochamma to Nizamsagar via Haldiwagu, the current rulers are using it to highlight the failures of the past rulers. This is causing trouble to the farmers.

Groundwater availability 10.41 meters

Although the availability of groundwater in Nalgonda and Suryapet districts has improved somewhat, small and medium water resources have run out of water. The situation in Yadadri is serious. In Yadadri district, the availability of groundwater was 10.41 meters in June last year.

In June this year, it was recorded as 12.22 meters. Experts believe that due to the current lack of irrigation water release, there is a risk of the water level falling further as boreholes and motors have to be resorted to for crop cultivation. There is a severe shortage of rain in the districts.

From June 1 to July 15, Suryapet district recorded the highest rainfall of 47 percent less than normal. Nalgonda recorded 37 percent less and Yadadri recorded 36 percent less. In Yadadri district, Bhuvanagiri recorded 65 percent less rainfall, and Bibinagar and Gundal recorded 62 percent less rainfall. Narayanapuram mandal of Yadadri district received 71 percent more rain than usual.

In Karimnagar district, the lack of rain and rising temperatures have increased the consumption of electricity for agriculture as well as household needs. There are 77 thousand agricultural electricity connections in the district. The target of electricity demand in July is 5.8 million units per day. If we look at the consumption of the last six days, it is approaching the demand. On July 14, 5.07 million units were used in the district. This situation has arisen due to lack of rain and use of bore water. If this continues, there will be a risk of power cuts .
