
Hyderabad: August 8, 2025: Telangana Elite Action Group for Drug Law Enforcement (Eagle) in HyderabadAt Medicity Medical CollegeA cannabis racket has been busted. 82 users, including 32 students, have been identified after the arrest of Aafat Ahmed Khan (23) and Zarina Banu (46), who were supplying cannabis. The incident has raised concerns about the spread of drugs in the city.
Student marijuana use
Eagle’s investigation has revealed that 32 students studying at Medicity Medical College are using marijuana. Drug tests were conducted on 24 of them, and nine, including two female students, tested positive. All these students live in the college hostel. Eagle officials and the college management together conducted counseling for the students in the presence of their parents. The nine who tested positive were shifted to a de-addiction center, and officials said the next 30 days are crucial for their recovery.
Eagle has announced that it will continue to conduct surprise inspections to eradicate drugs in colleges. The incident is being discussed in X, and concerns are being expressed about the increasing use of drugs among the youth.
Aafat Ahmed Khan and Zarina Banu arrested
Eagle arrested Aafat Ahmed Khan with 2 kg of ganja on August 1. Based on his statement, on August 5, Zarina Banu from Bidar, Karnataka, was caught with 4 kg of ganja. A total of 6 kg of ganja, worth Rs. 1.5 lakh, was seized.
- Aafat Ahmed Khan : 23-year-old Khan was addicted to ganja and took to drug peddling to manage his habit. He used to supply ganja in Hyderabad along with Zarina Banu. He made significant transactions to her UPI account from August 2024 to 2025. Cases under the NDPS Act were previously registered at Tukaramgate and Alwal police stations.
- Zarina Banu : 46-year-old Zarina has been peddling drugs since 2010. She used to procure ganja from Parli and Bidar in Maharashtra and supply it in Hyderabad. She has four NDPS cases against her and escaped arrest in another case in Bidar in 2024. Suspicious transactions worth Rs 1.5 crore were made in her bank account, of which Rs 26 lakh came from 51 peddlers in Hyderabad.

Drug supply network
Zarina Banu used to procure ganja from Maharashtra and Karnataka and sell it in Hyderabad through cash and UPI. Eagle’s investigation identified 51 peddlers, who paid Zarina Rs 20 lakh. Khan and Zarina’s network supplied it to various sections of consumers, including Medicaid students .
Government, Eagle actions
Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy launched Eagle on June 26, 2025, calling for a collective effort to eradicate drugs. Eagle, under the auspices of the Telangana Anti-Narcotics Bureau (TGANB) , is disrupting drug trafficking at the state borders as well as disrupting local supply networks.
