Ahmedabad : There has been tension across the country over the safety of air travel after the Air India plane crash. Especially during take-off and landing, frequent collisions with birds or animals are becoming dangerous. Hyderabad Rajiv Gandhi International Airport has recorded 49 incidents in the first five months of 2025. Most of these were incidents of birds and animals colliding with aircraft. Moreover, 11 Mayday calls were also received. This has become a serious warning compared to the last seven years. According to data released by the DGCA, 1,633 collisions were recorded at the top 20 airports in the country in 2022. These increased to 2,269 in 2023. They decreased slightly in 2024 to 2,066. In 2025, 641 incidents were recorded till May. That is, this problem has increased significantly.
The situation is more severe in big cities like Delhi and Ahmedabad.
Delhi’s IGI Airport recorded 442 bird strike incidents in 2022, 616 in 2023, and 419 in 2024. The situation is still improving, with 95 incidents reported as of May 2025. In Ahmedabad, the number increased from 80 in 2022 to 214 in 2023. Experts say that rapid urbanization around airports, accumulation of garbage, and availability of food sources for animals – all of these are leading to accidents. The problem is likely to worsen if the shelters of birds are not reduced.

Airport officials say that cooperation from municipal and panchayat officials is key for this.
