India is taking a new direction in hydroelectricity generation. The central government has started planning to set up large-scale hydro power plants on the Brahmaputra river. The project, which will be implemented at an estimated cost of Rs 6.4 lakh crore, is targeted to be completed by 2047. The center has announced its intention to achieve a total hydroelectric capacity of 76 gigawatts through this plan. This will be the largest plan in the history of hydroelectricity in India. If this project is completed, it will be possible to become self-reliant in electricity supply not only for North India but also for the entire country, officials said.Discover more

This hydropower project will be implemented mainly in the northeastern states – Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Nagaland, Manipur etc. A total of 208 large hydro projects have been proposed in 12 sub-basins. The Centre said that they will have a hydropower capacity of 64.9 GW, and an additional 11.1 GW of pumped storage plants will be created for electricity storage. Experts believe that the natural flow of the Brahmaputra River, height differences, and wide flow area are highly suitable for these projects.

This project will also play a key role in terms of ecological balance, river flow control, and development of border states. Hydropower projects will not only reduce carbon emissions, but also increase the use of renewable energy sources. At the same time, it is expected to bring about major changes in employment opportunities, infrastructure development, and transportation systems in the northeastern states. Overall, this mega hydro project to be built on the Brahmaputra river will be a historic innovation that will lead the country towards “Clean Energy India”.
