
The Election Commission ( EC ) has taken a key decision to allow the use of Aadhaar card for voter identification across the country in the voter list revision process . This decision has been taken by making changes to the methods implemented so far.

The Election Commission has sent clear instructions to the Chief Electoral Officers of all states as per these new guidelines. These changes will come into effect in the upcoming Special Summary Revision (SSR ) process of the electoral roll.

Currently available identification documents
Currently, there are 11 types of documents that are allowed for voter identification: passport, driving license, bank/post office passbook, PAN card, employer-issued ID, and student ID. Aadhaar card will now be added to these.

Officials said that this change is expected to speed up the voter registration and verification processes and will be less hassle for the people. Since people are already using Aadhaar a lot, it is expected to be a user-friendly decision.
