1. Background: Why was the ban imposed?
On 4th September 2025, the Nepal government took a shocking step. It suddenly banned 26 major social media platforms ( Facebook , Instagram , WhatsApp, YouTube, X/Twitter, Snapchat, LinkedIn, Reddit, Signal etc.) .
- The government claimed that these companies were not complying with the mandatory local registration under Nepal’s new law.
- But the public and analysts believed that the real reason was growing public criticism, exposure of corruption and demand for accountability of leaders .
This was the reason why the youth considered this ban as a direct attack on democratic rights and freedom of expression .

2. “Gen-Z” is boiling on the streets
As soon as the ban was imposed, Nepal’s youth—especially Generation Z —came off social media and began protesting on the streets.
- In big cities including Kathmandu, thousands of students and youth started marching towards the Parliament House.
- It was written on the posters – “Remove Nepo Babies, Save Democracy!”
- This movement became not just for the internet but also against corruption, nepotism and unemployment .

3. Police repression and bloodshed
Initially the protest was peaceful, but when the crowd increased the police and security forces started using force.
- First, water cannon and tear gas were used.
- Then rubber bullets.
- And finally— live bullets were fired.
At least 19 people were killed and hundreds injured in this violence .
Blood flowed on the streets of Kathmandu, and the world saw the government’s barbaric face on democracy.
4. International response
- The United Nations (UN) , Amnesty International and several human rights organisations condemned the violence.
- He demanded an independent and impartial investigation from Nepal.
- The global media dubbed this phenomenon the “Gen-Z Revolution.”
5. Government bowing down and lifting the ban
After continued protests and bloodshed the government came under pressure.
- An emergency cabinet meeting was called.
- It was announced that the ban on social media would be lifted.
- Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli said the situation arose due to “misunderstanding” and “policy ambiguity”.
- The government has constituted an inquiry committee , whose report is claimed to come in 15 days.
Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak also resigned, taking moral responsibility for the violence.

6. Current status (as of September 2025)
- All major social media platforms are now operational again in Nepal .
- The protests are peaceful now, but the public, especially the youth, are still angry and alert .
- The families of the deceased are demanding justice and compensation.
- The Prime Minister has announced compensation to the victim families and free treatment to the injured.
7. Real picture: Not just the internet, but a revolution
This incident is not just about internet ban and its return. It tells us that—
- “Gen-Z” has now become the real guardian of democracy and freedom.
- The youth of Nepal are not going to be afraid anymore.
- If the government commits atrocities, the people have the power to come out on the streets and bring it down.
Yes—today the ban on social media has been lifted in Nepal . But this ban has shaken Nepal. This movement made it clear that the voice of the youth can neither be suppressed by locks nor by bullets.
