Free Bus: Free bus service for women of many states during Rakhi festival

Raksha Bandhan: Free bus travel for women, gift from statesAhead of the Raksha Bandhan celebrations across the country on Saturday (August 9, 2025), several state governments have announced free bus travel for women. This initiative has been taken to make travel easier for women visiting their brothers during the festival. States like Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttarakhand are implementing these schemes, and in addition, some states are also offering financial rewards.

Uttar Pradesh: Three days of free travel

In UP, the Yogi Adityanath government has announced free bus travel facility for women for three days from 6 am on August 8 to midnight on August 10. This facility is applicable to UPSRTC (Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation) buses as well as city buses in urban and rural areas. The government has said that it will run 2,500 additional buses keeping in mind the rush of passengers. The announcement has received positive responses on X, with women posting posts welcoming the initiative.

Rajasthan: Two-day offer

The Rajasthan government has announced a two-day festival for women on August 9 and 10.Besides, it is providing free travel facility in all government buses across the state. The decision was taken on the orders of Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, and it is being implemented for the first time in the state as a two-day free travel offer. Rajasthan Road Transport Corporation (RSRTC) buses, deluxe and Volvo services are also part of this scheme. The offer was hailed as a “step towards women empowerment” in X.

Haryana, Madhya Pradesh: Free travel, financial rewards

Haryana Transport Minister Anil Vij announced free bus travel facility for women and children below 15 years of age from 12 noon on August 8 to midnight on August 9. This facility is applicable on Haryana Roadways buses as well as buses going to Delhi and Chandigarh. In Madhya Pradesh, free travel is available for women in city buses in Bhopal and Indore cities on August 9. In addition, under the “Ladli Behna Yojana”, eligible women are being given a Rakhi bonus of Rs. 1,500 and a festival gift of Rs. 250 .

Other states: tradition, permanent schemes

Uttarakhand State Road Transport Corporation (UTC) buses continue to provide free travel to women on Rakhi Day, an annual tradition. Free bus travel is also available to women in Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula (Tricity) areas on August 9. Punjab, Karnataka and Delhi have free bus travel schemes for women throughout the year, but in Delhi this facility is limited to local women and DTC buses only. Free bus travel is already available to women in Telangana, and the scheme will be implemented in Andhra Pradesh from August 15.
